Holocaust Memorial Day

Year 8 student leaders represented the school at Durham County Council’s Holocaust Memorial Day event at the Empire Theatre in Consett on Monday.

They heard a talk from the families of survivors of the Holocaust, and found out about the Kindertransport. Around 10,000 children were given asylum in the UK, and Jewish parents in Germany faced the difficult choice of sending their children to a foreign country where they might be safe, or keeping them with them, as the UK only accepted children, and not their parents.

Many of these child refugees arrived in the North East, and students heard their stories.

They were a credit to the school.
