7 A Side Football

On Friday the 15th of July we had our last sporting event of the academic year. Seven of our football girls travelled to Parkside to take part in a fun 7 a-side football tournament.

Our first game in the group stages was against Woodham. After a few minutes we had an opportunity when a perfectly timed pass was picked up by Romilly who placed the ball straight into the back of the net. Not happy with just the one goal, the ball was played through again to Romilly who managed to get it straight past the keeper resulting in a 2-0 win.

With our first win under our belts, we went into our next game full of confidence. Greenfield were our next opponents who fielded a strong side. Ferryhill displayed some fantastic footballing ability with some extremely strong defending from Freya. The final score was 3-1 with 2 goals from Neve S and 1 from Macie.

For our last game of the group stage, we were up against Whitworth B. From the off, we were strong. Freyja made sure she restricted Whitworth to very few chances and once we scored one, they just kept on coming. Our first hattrick of the tournament came from Romilly with an addition of 2 more goals from Neve S making it a 5-0 victory sending us into the semi-finals.

We faced Whitworth A in the semi-final. Lexie and Freya made sure that no one was getting past which made keeper Freyja’s job a lot easier. Macie and Neve H continued to work hard creating chances for Neve S and Romilly. Neve S created her own chances by taking the ball from her own half and managing to navigate around every player infront of her ending her success by squaring the ball into the bottom left. Macie managed to bag herself another goal, along with 5 from Neve S, giving us a 6-0 victory.

In the final we faced Woodham who we had previously beaten 2-0 in the group stages. Both sides started off quiet, both knowing what was a stake. We played some lovely passing football where chances were created but shots unfortunately denied by Woodhams goalkeeper. The second half started goalless but a break for Woodham saw them take a 1-0 lead. As the time ticked down, Woodham parked the bus and as the full time whistle blew, Woodham had clinched the win.

The day was a huge success and to finish 2nd place was a great result. The girls played with great tenacity and determination which in turn resulted in some high quality football.

A massive well done to you all
