World War One Day

On Wednesday 15th December we were lucky enough to be visited by the team from Frontline History. They specialise in teaching students about World War One in an interactive and engaging way, using real weapons, uniforms and artefacts from the war. Our Year 8 students, plus GCSE History students in Years 9-11 all took part, and enjoyed finding out about key events such as the Battle of the Somme, and the injuries and illnesses soldiers suffered from. GCSE students have to study the war for their exam, and so this was an excellent opportunity to learn more and prepare for exam questions. They discovered what happened to injured soldiers, and how they would be evacuated and treated, as well as common injuries and injuries such as trench foot, gas attacks and Shell Shock.

“I loved being able to handle real artefacts from the war. The guns and bombs were fascinating”

Year 8 student.

“This has really helped me with my revision for the Medicine paper, and I understand how soldiers were treated much better after today”

Year 11 student.
