Holocaust Memorial Day
January 27th was Holocaust Memorial Day, which is remembered each yeah on the anniversary of the liberation of the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, during World War Two.
FBEC students from Year 8 and Year 9 listened to a talk given by Mr Uri Winterstein, who survived the Holocaust. Nine of his family were sent to Auschwitz, where they were killed. Uri’s father was arrested and sent to a concentration camp, whilst his mother and sister were able to hide. However, they were all caught and also sent to the same concentration camp, where they were miraculously able to find his father and reunite. Uri’s family managed to hide him with a non-Jewish family, but he was shown little attention, and when he was reunited with his family after the war, he could not walk or talk, and ate only small pieces of bread roll dipped in coffee, the only food he had been given. After the war, the family became refugees in Brazil and then Britain.
