Geography
Why should students study your subject?
The study of geography stimulates an interest & a sense of wonder about places. It helps students make sense of a complex & dynamically changing world. It explains where places are, how places & landscapes are formed, how people & their environment interact & how a diverse range of economies, societies & environments are interconnected. It builds on students’ own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global. Geographical enquiry encourages questioning, investigation & critical thinking about issues affecting the world & people’s lives, now & in the future. Fieldwork is an essential element of this. Students can learn to think spatially & use maps, visual images & new technology (GIS), to obtain, present & analyse information. Geography inspires students to explore their own place in the world, their values & their responsibilities to people, to the environment & to global sustainability.

What is your overall curriculum intent?
Geography at FBEC contributes to the whole school curriculum intent by developing pupil knowledge of all aspects of Geographical Studies. The overarching intent of our curriculum for Key Stage 3 Geography is to deepen learning by investigating a wide range of people, places & environments. To start & learn about the geographical patterns & processes & the political, economic, social & environmental factors affecting people & places. Learn about the interdependence between places & environments & carry out geographical enquiry inside & outside the classroom. To ask geographical questions such as, “How & why is this landscape changing?”, “What is the impact of the changes?” To collect & analyse statistical evidence to answer such questions & be encouraged to develop a personal opinion. To use a wide range of geographical skills & resources, such as maps, satellite images & ICT to answer questions. To extend geographical vocabulary & have a greater awareness of the location of places & environments studied & in the news. The curriculum intent for Key Stage 4 Geography is to consolidate & then further enhance the knowledge, understanding & skills developed during Key Stage 3, in order to prepare pupils for the requirements & rigours of AQA GCSE Geography and beyond.
How is it implemented?
Key Stage 3 & 4 Geography is taught via a series of carefully sequenced units which promote the development of Geographical knowledge, understanding & skills. In Key Stage 4 Geography this focus is emphasised through the Assessment Objectives (AO1, AO2, AO3 & AO4.) At the start, throughout & at the end of each unit pupils will be made aware of the Big Picture, Key Objectives & Outcomes of the studied unit. Departmental planning will identify the skills, key knowledge & understanding concepts to be learned by pupils & embedded into long term memory. This will be regularly checked by teachers during lessons, homework task & via more formal assessment opportunities. How can someone improve in your subject?
