A Trip of a Lifetime: Teachers and Students Relish New York Adventure
Last week, a group of students and teachers from Ferryhill School embarked on an unforgettable journey to New York City, an adventure that left everyone with memories to cherish for a lifetime. The trip, organised as part of the school's Turing Scheme Educational Excursion program, aimed at Women in Business and immersing students in the vibrant culture, history, and iconic landmarks of the Big Apple.
From the moment they arrived, the excitement was palpable. "Seeing the city skyline as we landed was surreal," said Ms McGuiggan, Director of Business who chaperoned the trip along with Ms Lea. "For many of our students, this was their first time flying, let alone visiting a city as dynamic as New York."
The Heritage Hotel was central to the needs to the group and the itinerary was packed with must-see sights and enriching experiences. The group started their adventure with a visit to the Empire State Building and Times Square, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where they delved into America's immigrant history. "Seeing the Statue of Liberty was a powerful moment for us all," said Summer who was also a first-time flyer. "It’s something you see in movies, but being there in person is indescribable."
Next, the group explored the underground train system to Jersey Gardens and had a lovely meal in Applebee’s Grill which was a personal favourite for the students. The educational component of the trip was further enhanced with a visit to the New York Business and Law School with Brian J Kaszuba. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to see inside a NYC classroom and speak with Brian and ask questions about the bar exam and how it was recognised in the different states, Judge Judy also attended this law school. The One World Trade Centre was then visited and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, a poignant experience that left a lasting impact on everyone. Following on from that very busy day, was an evening meal at Panda Express and a theatrical experience on “The Ride” which the students and staff loved.
Broadway was another highlight of the trip. The students had the opportunity to watch a live performance of the hit musical “Chicago”. "The energy of Broadway is unmatched," said Olivia and Alice, both students who were part of the trip. "The performance was breath-taking, and it was incredible to witness the talent up close and we even met the cast and got signed autographs."
Evenings were spent exploring the city’s diverse neighbourhoods and sampling a variety of cuisines.
The trip concluded with a visit to the Edge for a small group of students and a walk along the Highline of New York.
As they boarded the plane back home, the group were exhausted from the extraordinary blend of education, culture, and adventure. This experience has broadened the students’ horizons and provided memories of a lifetime.
The Ferryhill School trip to New York City was not just a visit to a city, but a journey of discovery and learning that will resonate with students and teachers for years to come.
