International Women’s Day

School celebrated International Women’s Day, which took place on Tuesday 8th March 2022. We learnt more about why the day exists, the inequalities that still happen around the world and celebrated some of the women who have broken the bias and changed the world we live in. We looked at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson who was the first woman to qualify as a doctor and surgeon in Britain. She went on to start her own teaching hospital so other women could study, which then became University College London.

We also learnt about Katherine Johnson, an American mathematician who worked out calculations for the first US crewed spaceflight. She was so successful she has a satellite and space-craft named after her and her story is told in the film Hidden Figures.

We encouraged all pupils to consider how they can break the bias, and how they can celebrate the female figures in their lives.
