Languages

Why should students study your subject?

Learning a language will help you to:

• learn enhanced adaptability and communication skills

• Deepen your cultural awareness

• Give you the edge in the jobs market

• Travel, study, work or live abroad

Students learning languages in both KS3 and 4 enjoy trips to theatre, cinema, universities and competitive language events around the County.

Students love the opportunity to go to France on our yearly, fun-packed trip to Northern France.

What skills does your subject teach?

Learning French helps your communication skills and helps with your verbal confidence. You will improve your listening skills, learn how to memorise and helps you to problem solve.

Why is your subject useful for the world of work, or future employment? What kind of jobs could someone do using your subject? How can students take your subject further, eg at college, university, the world of work etc

Most UK based companies are both international and global. These companies prefer to recruit candidates who can speak a second language as they are more valuable to them. You may want to work in; Export, Sales, Human resources, Marketing – if your company is global, you need to be global!

It goes without saying that your chances of success in the travel industry will be hugely improved by speaking a second language. It’s absolutely necessary for most; Pilots, cabin crew, check-in staff and holiday reps.

Want to work in the armed forces? They actively recruit candidates with a second language

What is your overall curriculum intent?

MFL at this school contributes to the whole school curriculum by producing coherent and sequenced schemes of work, providing the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress onto the next stage of education or work, irrespective of prior attainment, background or ethnicity.

The overarching intent of our curriculum for MFL is to:

• Nurture confident and capable linguists who can work independently in their speaking and writing by applying the rules of PHONICS in order to be able to decode language autonomously, work with a range of VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR and eventually complex structures within all four language learning skills.

• Our students will be able to express opinions and offer justifications.

• Learning is themed around contemporary real-world topics and issues which gradually introduces increasingly complex levels of language to stretch and challenge students.

There is a wealth of Apps, help, and resources for language learning out there on the world wide web.

We highly recommend that every student learning a language sets themselves up with a Duolingo account. This is a fun, interactive language learning App that helps you with your French vocab from absolute beginner through to GCSE

All language students will have their own ‘Activelearn’ account and login. This provides online homework and access to the interactive textbook for independent work directly linked to the French curriculum.
